On Site at Hollis Croft

The Kimpton team have just commenced on site at the new Hollis Croft Student Accommodation project in Sheffield. It’s a £1.8m Mechanical Services project we announced here and we expect to be on site for the next 18 months.

Over the coming months, we’ll be revisiting the project and sharing updates as there are quite a few interesting innovations in the construction method and the way the mechanical services side of the project is being managed by our own team.

The project will last up to 18 months and hopefully all will be plain sailing from start to finish. The main scope of the work consists of design and build of the mechanical and plumbing system.

The domestic water system is supplied from a large sectional cold water storage tank located in the basement plantroom and boosted throughout the building. A series of gas fired wall mounted boilers and Combined Heat and Power Systems provide heat to a constant temperature circuit that serve the two unvented hot water heat exchangers and buffer vessels.

A CHP system is the process of capturing and re-using energy or waste heat produced by an engine when generating electricity. This recovered waste heat is then utilised to provide either heating to the building or the production of hot water to serve all bathroom pods and other hot water outlets throughout the accommodation.

Following on from the success gained from previous schemes the bathrooms are of the pod format, where they are all manufactured off-site and then lowered by crane onto a cantilevered platform on the outside of the building where they are skillfully maneuvered into place. The modular pods save time, resources, create less waste and potential risks of damages and theft. This streamlining of the construction process has many benefits which makes the bathroom pod option very attractive for large scale construction projects.

Hollis Croft is another great student accommodation project in Sheffield which is fast becoming one of the best student cities in the UK. This follows on from the works nearing completion at Bailey Fields student accommodation which is just a stone’s throw away from this site. Bailey Fields has been a great success and we are confident the works at Hollis Croft will follow suit and the student accommodation will be finished in time for the 2019 student intake.
