Industrial Pipework in the Process Industry

At Kimptons, we work on quite a number of commercial plumbing projects on process site of all sizes and across all sorts of industries. It’s where we believe we are stronger than many as we have honed our skills on the many process projects we delivered over our 50 years. Interestingly, the skills we have learned on the bigger industrial pipework projects have allowed us to deliver with even greater efficiency on all of the smaller projects.

The principles of moving air, water and other gases and liquids safely, are all broadly the same whatever the industry, it’s just the scale of operations that changes so completely between top end commercial and domestic style work.

So as you can imagine, many of our most experienced team members love it when they get the chance to work on some of the very biggest projects. Big, heavy industrial projects that push the scales to new limits. This latest one shown here is for a fibreglass insulation manufacturing plant in the UK.

The project involved the design, fabrication and installation of an extension to the existing 350mm steel header, to allow for two additional compressor units to be added into the system as back-ups.

The challenges

The challenges were obvious.

The header extension which is almost big enough for a human to crawl through, made of mild steel weighs in at over 500kg and needs to be fitted at the top of the system – conveniently at a height of 30m. This is then to be connected to the two compressor units at floor level via over 20m lengths of 150mm stainless pipework. The header unit carries three pumps to move air around the factory to power the production processes.

The first phase of this supersized industrial pipework project has been delivered as you can see from these images and we will report back when the rest of the installation has been completed.
