Shaping our future

Kimpton have been helping to create the sustainable building environments of tomorrow since 1963. Through providing innovative M&E and HVAC Services across the Liverpool City Region, we’ve always been at the forefront of decarbonisation and the drive for net-zero.

As early as 1974, we were designing and installing heat pumps for Walkers Crisps and went on to deliver two other UK firsts in renewable technology. With TATA Steel, we helped develop the first Transpired Solar Collectors in the UK, and with the National Trust, we designed and installed the UK’s first Open Water Source Heat Pump in the sea at Plas Newydd, Anglesey.

Since those early days, we’re still innovating every day, week and year we’re in business.

We’ve always believed that renewable technology would shape our future. This focus is every bit as strong today as it was back then. We’ve gained years of expertise in renewables, way before it was a buzzword for modern business.

It’s this early adopter position that’s put us ahead of the game in the rush towards decarbonisation and it’s even written into our business purpose.

There’s a worldwide push for net zero and we’re leading the charge. No-one is getting there without engineers.

We want the best and brightest minds to join us, drive us and help deliver that net zero goal. If that feels like your kind of future, we’d love to have you on board.

Vision and Values

Here at Kimpton, we believe that business is better for everyone when it delivers on both sustainability and social value. We’re passionate about our part in this global fight against climate change and are constantly working hard to become more sustainable through our commitment to providing renewable energy services, decarbonisation and solutions that improve energy efficiency.

We’re proud to be supporting our local community by focusing our procurement on local businesses that share our vision of creating a more sustainable world. We work hard to ensure that we employ locally and provide long-term, sustainable employment opportunities that support education, wellbeing and inclusion.

None of this would be possible without a workforce reflecting our values and putting them at the heart of everything we do.

Winners at the Liverpool Chamber Awards 2023

In October 2023 we scooped two awards at the Liverpool Chamber Innovation in Business Awards in our 60th year! We are particularly pleased as the first was for Talent Development Award and the second, The overall Chair’s Award!

Back in 2019 we ran a series of workshops with our team and undertook a strategic review of how we operate as a business and the values that are important to us. This resulted in the development of our first Social Value and Sustainability Strategy that put social value and sustainability at the heart of everything we do.

This framework has allowed us to leverage, deliver, measure, record and evidence our social value activity alongside the delivery of our sustainability targets and Net Zero goals.

The framework is managed by our employee-led ESG Group. This covers every aspect of our business from the way we recruit to the way we manage our jobs in the field and has led to us working to deliver social value and sustainability throughout the business.

We are passionate advocates of apprenticeships and technical training so that we can encourage the next generation into our industry, who as the Engineers delivering renewables and decarbonisation, are on the frontline in the race to Net Zero.

This was a real team win.

Apprenticeships,  placements and work experience

We’re committed to providing educational and career support through apprenticeships, placements and work experience.

Apprentices have always been a vital source of talent for Kimpton. There has never been a time that we haven’t had an apprentice training with us, and we work hard to retain them after they’ve qualified and support them to progress in their career. It is because of this commitment to providing a supportive environment that over half of our senior management team started life at Kimpton as apprentices.

We recognise that work experience is an enormously valuable part of a young person’s education, therefore, we offer placements allowing pupils to experience work in a real-world setting. For those who want to explore further opportunities with us, we offer a pathway to a Kimpton Apprenticeship through local colleges when they leave school. We then support their studies by offering them further work experience placements throughout their training and the opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship at the end of their diploma.

Training and Development

Our people are our greatest asset, and we’re proud to have a staff retention much higher than industry standards. We believe it’s our responsibility to ensure they’re safe, happy, and trained to deliver whatever we ask of them.

Kimpton achieves this by providing the best available training programmes through BESA (Building Engineering Services Association) along with many other in-house courses, employee engagement, communications skills, (including defibrillator training) and all levels of Continuous Professional Development.

We’ve worked hard to create a supportive environment that offers well-paid jobs, excellent career progression and development opportunities.

Keith Marsden – Site Supervisor – 40 years and counting

Keith joined Kimpton back in 1984 as a welder. Initially working at a bench, welding iron pipework for large HVAC jobs. Since then he has worked with most of our apprentices, completed numerous training courses himself and is a popular figure throughout the business.

In his own words “You have to be prepared to learn, push yourself outside your comfort zone and move with the times to stay relevant and useful. So, whilst I’ve been here for 40 years, the job has been completely varied from one day to the next and different again from one month to the next.”

Connor Leatt – From Apprentice to Site Supervisor

Connor joined Kimpton, aged 16 as an Apprentice Pipe Fitter. It was a four year block release course which entailed college for six separate two week blocks each year and the rest of the time working on site putting what you’d learnt into practice.

Connor is the perfect example of how the Kimpton Apprenticeship programme works. You are given all the training you need, the work experience you need and the support and guidance you really need to make a success of your career. You can read his story here.
