We are proud to announce that Kimpton has been awarded the full PPM contract to manage the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for the Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot, Merseyside.
Andy Morgan, who heads up the Kimpton PPM team, said: “We are incredibly proud to be looking after such a culturally significant landmark in our home region. It’s one of the area’s most prestigious performance spaces, and a unique one at that.”
Shakespeare North Playhouse opened in 2022 and serves as the final piece of the “Shakespearean triangle,” joining London and Stratford-upon-Avon. The venue’s crown jewel is the Cockpit-in-Court: a stunning, hand-carved timber theatre based on 17th-century designs. Remarkably, this traditional “box-in-a-box” structure is housed within a striking, modern, energy-efficient building that includes a studio space, a performance garden, and a gallery.
The site is historically significant, as Prescot was home to the only purpose-built Elizabethan playhouse outside of London during Shakespeare’s lifetime. Today, it acts as a vibrant community hub, driving local regeneration and celebrating the deep-rooted connection between the North West and the world’s most famous playwright.
The unique architecture of the 470-seat Jacobean theatre is built from reclaimed hardwood. Timber theatres require precise climate control to prevent warping or cracking, while the modern visitor areas need high-efficiency cooling and heating.
Kimpton’s expertise in complex mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems, and our many years’ experience maintaining performance spaces at LIPA and the Philharmonic, to name but a few, makes us the ideal “custodians” of this environment.
For all PPM clients, Kimpton offers a two-hour emergency response guarantee, made possible by our team of local, skilled engineers who live throughout the Liverpool City Region.
For the team at Kimpton, it’s a really important contract for us, but it also feels like a real win for the Liverpool City Region. To be able to draw on the skills of our own local talent to maintain such a prestigious venue is a genuine win-win.
