Decarbonisation

Most commercial buildings in the UK were designed around gas boilers, fluorescent lighting and very little insulation. Tightening EPC requirements under the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards mean many of them now have to change, or risk becoming impossible to let or sell at full value. The challenge is knowing where to start, and making sure the money goes where it will have the most impact.

Kimpton offers decarbonisation as a complete design and build service, delivered by one team under one programme. We work with specialist consultancy partners to audit a building’s energy use and carbon output. Then we deliver the measures in a sensible order: reduce demand first, move heat and hot water away from fossil fuels, then generate your own power. Cutting demand first matters, because a well insulated building with efficient lighting needs a smaller, cheaper heat pump to do the same job.

What our decarbonisation work covers:

– Energy and carbon audits with our consultancy partners
– Insulation, glazing replacement and upgrades
– LED lighting and lighting controls
– Air source and water source heat pumps, VRF and VRV systems
– Electric domestic hot water
– Commercial solar PV
– BMS and controls upgrades
– Electrical infrastructure upgrades to support new plant
– Roofing remedial work for rooftop plant
– Safe decommissioning and removal of redundant gas plant

Every building is different, so we design for the site rather than applying one solution everywhere. At Mersey Care’s Rathbone Hospital and three linked sites, a £2.3m public sector scheme removed gas-fired plant entirely. Where historic cast iron radiators had to stay, we paired air source heat pumps with water-to-water heat exchangers to reach the temperatures they need, and installed new LV panels to carry the extra electrical load. At Warrant House in Altrincham, a 1915 former police station, we replaced gas boilers with a Daikin VRV system across occupied offices in 14 weeks, running the cabling for a future solar PV phase while we were there. And at the Genesis Centre in Stoke on Trent, a 122kWp solar PV system is forecast to pay for itself in three and a half years.

We’ve been installing heat pumps since the 1970s, so we know how to deliver systems that cut carbon and still keep people warm, with sensible running costs.

If you’re facing an EPC deadline, an ageing gas boiler, or just want to know where to start, we’d like to talk about it. Call the Kimpton team on 0151 343 1963 or email website@kimpton.co.uk.
