Solar Panels, also known as Solar Photovoltaics or PV Panels, generate electricity by capturing the sun’s energy using photovoltaic cells. Whilst they perform to their optimum with the sun shining directly on to them, they don’t need direct sunlight to operate and will generate electricity on an overcast day too. The PV panels convert sunlight into electrical energy, which in turn can be used to power your building.
Solar PV is a Zero Carbon Technology. If you don’t use all of the energy that you generate then this is fed back into the National Grid and you receive payment for the excess energy you generate. Alternatively, you can install battery storage to capture this excess energy and then use it yourself when it’s nighttime and the panels aren’t generating, or it’s just not bright enough outside to generate enough for your own needs.

The figures and why you need Solar PV for commercial spaces
With the increase in electricity costs over recent years and no sign of this falling anytime soon, Solar PV has become a very simple business decision. These next few panels show a costed example of a recent project we have completed.
The first one shows the simulation results of what the system will deliver.
The system will deliver an annual energy production of over 131 MWh and save 25 tons of CO2 annually.
You can see from the panel below that the system is made up of 455 PV modules across the roof area and linked to three inverters. With a target cost of £180,000 for the system, it will deliver lifetime bill savings of nearly £850,000 and £666,000 of system profit. Perhaps the biggest change recently is the speed of payback. As recently as ten years ago, payback took 10 years or more. Now, with higher electricity prices, on this project, it is 3.8 years.

Over the course of a year, there are some months where the solar PV provision is delivering most of the electricity requirement. In the winter months, this is greatly reduced, but on average, across the whole year, you can see the savings below, which average at £3,800 plus per month. A reduction of 38%.
Where significant increases can also be made on the return, and shorten payback even further is in the export price you achieve for surplus energy you produce. This quote is based on only 7p per unit exported, but one provider (Octopus Energy) with their new Panel Power Beta are paying as much as 15p per kWh exported – Double what these calculations are based on.
