Overview

Kimpton has been appointed to deliver the full HVAC Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) contract for Shakespeare North Playhouse, one of the most culturally significant venues in the North West. Opened in 2022, the Playhouse completes the “Shakespearean triangle” alongside London and Stratford‑upon‑Avon and is home to the Cockpit‑in‑Court: a hand‑carved, timber Jacobean theatre inspired by 17th‑century designs.

This remarkable structure sits within a contemporary, energy‑efficient building that also houses a studio theatre, performance garden, and gallery. The venue plays a central role in Prescot’s ongoing regeneration, celebrating the town’s historic connection to Elizabethan theatre and acting as a vibrant community hub for the Liverpool City Region.

Scope of Works

Under this contract, Kimpton will manage all heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning systems across the Playhouse. This includes specialist climate‑control maintenance for the Cockpit‑in‑Court, where the timber construction demands exceptionally stable environmental conditions. Our team will also support the modern visitor areas with high‑efficiency heating and cooling solutions, ensuring comfort, reliability, and energy performance throughout the building. The service is delivered by our local engineers, enabling rapid response and continuity of care, including our standard two‑hour emergency response guarantee for all PPM clients.

Challenges

The Playhouse presents a unique technical challenge due to its hybrid architecture. The 470‑seat Jacobean theatre is built entirely from reclaimed hardwood, meaning even minor fluctuations in temperature or humidity could cause warping or cracking. Maintaining this delicate environment while also supporting the demands of a modern, high‑footfall public building requires a carefully balanced HVAC strategy. The venue’s busy performance schedule adds further complexity, with systems needing to operate reliably and efficiently at all times. Kimpton’s extensive experience in maintaining complex performance spaces, including LIPA and the Liverpool Philharmonic, ensures we are well‑placed to protect and preserve this extraordinary building.
