Client: Watkin Jones
Project: Sherlock Quarter Birmingham, BTR Scheme
Project Scope: Mechanical Services
Project Manager: Paul Davies
The landmark development on Sherlock Street in Birmingham has been completed and created over 550 new homes.
The development introduces 551 high quality apartments, across six buildings, with 47 of them being affordable homes, in the heart of Birmingham city centre.
Sherlock Quarter also includes 16,500 square feet of ground floor commercial space and a new pedestrianised public square. The development is situated close to the Bullring and Birmingham New Street Station, with an aim to reduce the reliance on cars within the city.
Residents will also be able to enjoy some exceptional amenities, with the site focused on creating a sustainable way of life through its co-working spaces, social lounges, gym, double-height sky lounge and a landscaped community garden.
Located just a short distance from the Bullring and Birmingham New Street Station, Sherlock Quarter offers unparalleled access to the city’s retail, dining and transport centres. The development’s combination of homes, amenities, and commercial space creates a new hub for the city.
Sherlock Quarter was designed with sustainability at its heart, incorporating many sustainable features, including Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS), electric vehicle charging points, and bicycle storage. The development has delivered WiredScore ‘Gold’ and interim stage BREEAM ‘Very Good’ in addition to HQM ‘Good’ certification.
At Kimpton we have seen first hand this significant move towards sustainability and our own early adopter status in the renewable space has certainly helped us deliver on this project. Sherlock Quarter is a showcase for Watkin Jones’ ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable, high-quality residential developments that address the housing challenges faced by cities across the UK.
Gwyn Pritchard, Managing Director – Construction at Watkin Jones, commented:
“The completion of Sherlock Quarter marks a significant achievement in our commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable housing in Birmingham. With one of the youngest populations in Europe, Birmingham needs high quality, affordable housing, and we are delighted to be delivering another brilliant development in the city.
“Sherlock Quarter not only helps address the city’s housing shortage, but also creates a vibrant, community-focused space that enhances the landscape and provides long-term sustainable living options for Birmingham residents.”
Paul Davies of Kimpton who led the project added:
“We are delighted to have delivered the mechanical services for the whole of the Sherlock Quarter BTR Scheme. It is another in the new breed of super efficient BTR projects we’re involved in that sits so well with our own business ethos.
We’ve seen a huge change in recent years with a distinct shift towards energy efficiency and ASHP based projects. The target audience for these apartments are often younger and very environmentally aware – being green is a definite conscious decision for many when choosing where to live their life and make their home. They are demanding lower carbon emissions from their homes and Watkin Jones and ourselves are very much ahead of the curve in delivering this.”
