West Tower is a 40-storey tall skyscraper close to the Liverpool waterfront, alongside the Capital Building. It is the tallest building in Liverpool. The 140m tall tower was originally built by Carillion at a cost of £35m and completed in 2007. The tower was built for property developers Beetham, who now use the lower five floors of the building as their headquarters.
There are 123 apartments across 38 floors and the Panoramic Restaurant on the 34th floor. The upper floors have a view across the river to Wales and on a clear day, you can see the Blackpool Tower along the coast.
Our brief is to maintain the air conditioning systems throughout the entire building. It’s one we know well as we have attended site over the years for some of the more challenging issues that have arisen.
Each apartment has it’s own Fan Coil, so there are 123 of them in total and there are external condensing units across 17 of the floors.
From a Net Zero perspective, the design was ahead of its time and has no gas anywhere in the building. With the future decarbonisation and EPC ratings in mind, this was an excellent decision by the architects Aedas and The Beetham Organisation, as it makes future upgrades and replacements far easier than having to retrofit a large electric capacity into the building.
