Biograd Stem Cell Laboratory fit-out

Biograd Stem Cell Laboratory fit-out

Client: Biograd
Location: Liverpool Science Park
Project: Laboratory fit-out
Project Managers: Scott Bennett and Phil Bowers

Background

Biograd in Liverpool has been established to provide long term cell banking for NHS trusts, academic researchers and those who wish to guarantee safe storage of their samples within the UK, focusing predominantly on storage of human biopsies, blood, stem cells, umbilical cords, semen and serum samples.

The project

Within an existing building, Kimpton were tasked with converting an existing office to a purpose built Stem Cell Laboratory with stores, prep areas and acoustic consultation labs.

We delivered all aspects of the project including mechanical, electrical, air conditioning, extraction and with liquid nitrogen storage with ventilation to suit.

The facility includes 5,000 sqft of sample preparation laboratories plus 5,000 sqft of long-term storage (-20oC to -196oC) in the same building which removes any risks of damage during transit.

Delivery

The project started with a full strip out of the site back to a bare shell. With the design for the space approved, we began the mechanical and electrical fit out.

Mechanical services were installed throughout to the lab and gowning areas with full air conditioning, ventilation and heating throughout. The filtration hood had an extraction system for safe working and there were wash-up facilities too.

On the electrical side, we installed lighting, data and power throughout to all areas, and also installed an Oxygen and CO2 monitoring system.

The flooring was a Polyfloor vinyl coved skirting in a Polysafe wood effect. The wall finish chosen was White Rock anti bacterial wipe down surface, to reduce the risk of contamination throughout the lab.

The door specification was interesting too. 3m high fire safe doors were purpose built to allow for the installation of larger equipment, as part of future plans whilst still allowing fire safe compartmentalised work areas.

Our acoustic experience also came into play for the consultation labs with an acoustic treatment for the walls and voids to ensure privacy during consultations for clients.

The project is the first stage in a wider programme to create a state of the art facility and position Biobank, Liverpool as a world leader in stem cell research and storage.

Kimpton have been creating labs for many years and have worked with some of the biggest businesses in the UK. From stem cells to clinical research and commercial research, we have the experience and the team to deliver.
