Client: Kronospan
Location: Chirk, Wrexham
Project: Site Wide maintenance
Project Manager: Mike Jebb
Kronospan in Chirk, Wrexham was established in the 1970s and has become their flagship UK facility, specialising in manufacturing wood‑based panel products like particleboard, MDF, decorative melamine-faced boards, laminate flooring, worktops, resins, and more.
The plant employs around 650 staff, with a further 100 onsite contractors daily. The site, which extends to over 120 acres transforms post-consumer recycled timber (furniture, pallets, etc.) along with sawmill residues into high-quality panels with up to 90% recycled content.
One of the warehouses on site measures 260 m × 60 m (about two Premier League football pitches in length) and overall it has a production capacity of ~600,000 m³ MDF and ~600,000 m³ particleboard per year, plus 18 million m² laminate flooring, 350,000 m³ melamine‑faced panels, and 500,000 worktops annually.
Our role will be to maintain all of the air conditioning units, the boilers and the chillers around the site. These are for the mechanical processing of materials as well as for comfort cooling in the office spaces. Overall, there are 200 air conditioning panel coolers, 200 air con units, six boilers and eight chillers.
As with many of the other industrial sites we maintain, while the vast majority of our work and time on site will be in conventional servicing, there will be repairs, replacements and reconfigurations, so it will keep us busy.
Mike Jebb is the Kimpton Project Manager for the site said “This type of contract is perfect for our team, as all of them are very experienced in working on this type of industrial site. We have engineers who live and work in and around the area for the occasional urgent call out, so adhering to a strict SLA should be no worries at all.”
