Client: Spire Murrayfield Hospital Wirral
Location: Wirral
Project: Water Heater Replacements
Project Manager: Paul Bowes
Spire Murrayfield Hospital is located in Barnston, Wirral and provides services for NHS, private and self-funding patients, over the age of 18 for outpatient, diagnostic, inpatient and day case surgical care.
The hospital has three operating theatres and a minor ops theatre that operate six days per week. It has capacity to accommodate 25 inpatients with ensuite single rooms and 17 day case patients and is open 24 hours per day, seven days a week.
There are also 16 consulting rooms across the site, including pre-op assessment rooms, breast care and outpatient consultations.
It’s a busy site any time of day or night, so it is essential it remains open and operational at all times.
The hospital produced its hot water for the X Ray and other departments via a single gas fired water heater. When this unit failed, an urgent response was required to ensure continuity of supply for patients and staff.
Kimpton offer temporary boiler and water heater hire, so this was the first port of call. Well within the day of the call out, the problem had been isolated and the new temporary boiler set had been installed to ensure zero downtime. This system was made up of three 50kW gas-fired Rinnai water heaters on a simple skid. the temporary system had been designed by our own team, so we were confident it would work exactly as required.
With the temporary boilers in place, it enabled us to isolate and strip the existing system and install the new one.
The finished system was made up of a buffer vessel and two higher efficiency Rinnai modulating boilers of 60kW each. This set up allows the system to spin up as much capacity as required and ensure both boilers are cycled evenly. The new system allows water to be raised in temperature from 20 degrees to its max of 65 degrees in only 15 minutes, so allows huge flexibility.
When it came to decommissioning the temporary boilers, we still managed to retain our zero downtime promise as the reconnection was done through stabbings into the existing pipework, designed for maximum flexibility.
The project was managed by Paul Bowes and Stuart Dilworth from start to finish. Speaking about it, Paul said “The whole project went well from the outset. Customers like Spire Murrayfield have to be able to operate with zero downtime. Our temporary hot water heater system saved the day in this project and allowed us to carry out the system upgrade with no dramas and zero downtime.”
