Nightingale House Hospice M&E Refurbishment

Nightingale House Hospice Wrexham

The client

Nightingale House is a Hospice in Wrexham that serves the people of North East Wales. There’s a 12 bed inpatient ward, a 15 patient daycare unit, outpatient clinic and a whole host of additional specialist services including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, an ambulance service and bereavement support services, including specialist services for children and young adults. All of this exceptional care is delivered free of charge and it is funded entirely by donations and fundraising.

The challenge(s)

The first major challenge with this project was that for the duration, the hospice continued to be fully operational. The Kimpton team carried out all of the works with no disruption to the medical areas. We worked within designated areas and protective screens were installed to prevent disruption. When we had to shut down any of the mechanical services, they were all completed out of hours.

The second major challenge was the COVID 19 lockdown. During this period, we were unable to progress works as the hospice did not allow access to anyone bar critical care staff. Following revised UK Government guidance the hospice allowed our staff to re-enter certain areas and through daily consultation we were able to continue to make progress and complete the work.

When it came to the technical solutions this offered some real challenges too. To ensure we offered a system that was fit for purpose, we had to complete surveys of the existing services to ensure all were operational and suitable for modifications.

For the team on site, there were some personal challenges too. We formed a good relationship directly with the Hospice and have recently been awarded the annual maintenance for all their mechanical plant. It’s not until you work there that you actually realise how critical this hospice is for the terminally ill. Their care and professionalism is astounding and all our staff conducted themselves in a respectful manner and felt humbled by the selflessness of the staff and volunteers.

The solution

The project was completed in two phases, over 12 months, with a 2 month delay due to COVID Restrictions. During this time, we removed all existing mechanical services within designated phases. We then installed new heating, ventilation, air conditioning, hot and cold water services, sanitary ware including specialist medical equipment.
